Protective Packing Materials For Moving

The Five Most Protective Packing Materials

Now that you’ve found a new home and have scheduled your move, you are now finally ready to start packing. Some packing materials can make or break (pun intended) your move so it’s important that you invest in the right ones. Following is a list of packing materials we feel you should have on hand before you pack. From fragile dishware and antiques to electronics and pictures, we think these are your best choices for packing materials.

Packing Paper

Packing paper is incredibly easy to use and one of the most affordable ways to protect your belongings. Large rolls of packing paper can usually be purchased for under $25 giving you extra money toward other packing supplies. Use packing paper to protect your kitchen items like glasses, mugs, bowls and pots and pans. It’s perfect for small electronics, picture frames and paintings. You can also use packing paper to fill in the empty spaces between items in moving boxes, thus giving an extra layer of protection. This helps prevent your items from shifting during the move. If you have an especially fragile item, an extra layer of bubble cushion wrap will give extra protection. We don’t recommend using newsprint as that could end up staining your belongings with ink.

Bubble Wrap

Bubble Wrap (also known as Bubble Cushion Wrap) is a plastic material made up of small air-filled bubbles that provide cushioning to materials. It’s very lightweight so it won’t weigh down your boxes the way other materials can. It provides a high layer of protection for your belongings. We highly recommend using bubble wrap for fragile items like glassware, china, or anything that has even a small chance of breaking. To save money using bubble wrap (it’s more expensive than packing paper, but more protective), use it as a single layer around groups of items that are packed together using packing paper, such as stacked bowls with packing paper in between. You will potentially use a lot of bubble wrap so stock up, so you don’t run out.

Styrofoam Packing Peanuts

No doubt you’ve had to dig your way through a box of Styrofoam packing peanuts to search for a package. Packing peanuts are a great way to fill the empty spaces in your packing boxes but they come at a price of cleaning up the mess on the other end of your move. Add to that the fact they don’t add the most protective layer to keep your valuables safe during transit, those items are best left wrapped in packing paper or bubble wrap. We recommend larger pieces of Styrofoam to fill those spaces if you have it or again, just use packing paper.

Packing Foam

Packing foam comes in multiple forms such as rolls, sheets, and pouches. Packing pouches are the easiest way to protect your valuables, simply insert your item in a pouch, tape and you’re done.  Foam rolls and sheets are recommended for larger items. The main disadvantage to packing foam is the cost. Packing foam is more expensive than packing paper and bubble wrap.

Packing Kits

Packing kits aren’t the least expensive way to pack but they are the best way to make sure your fragile items are packed safely. Packing up your kitchen would be the best use of specialty packing kits. Dish packing kits along with glass divider kits are extremely useful. The kits come with a cardboard divider that can easily be put together. The benefit of packing kits is they keep your items separated so they don’t touch or break during your move.
