Summer is the most popular time to move for good reason. The kids are out of school, the weather is nice, and weekend trips and fun summer activities are taken. You may also have more flexibility in your work schedule to plan a move. But don’t forget that moves in the summer are very different than other times during the year. Heatwaves can strike which can not only leave you feeling hot and miserable but can be downright dangerous. Your belongings could be in trouble as well. Here are some things to consider when moving in the summer heat:
Move Early In The Day If Possible.
If using a moving company, try to get scheduled early in the day. Summer morning temperatures can be as much as 10 degrees cooler than in the afternoon. It will be much cooler and more bearable than in the middle of the day. Not only for you but for your moving team as well.
Dress For The Right Season.
Light-colored, loose-fitting clothes will be more comfortable during the heat of the day. Also, choose materials that will wick away moisture and keep you cool. Avoid things like synthetics and polyesters which are not breathable fabrics. Wearing a high SPF sunscreen will keep you from burning and causing a new set of problems after the move.
Turn Utilities On In Your New Home.
Arriving to your new home having the air conditioning already on will be a welcome relief to you and your team of movers. If that isn’t possible, bring portable fans to help with air flow until the air conditioning in your new home has cooled it down sufficiently.

Have a Full Day’s Supply Of Bottled Water On Hand.
Drinking enough water during a heatwave will stave off dehydration. If you don’t drink enough, before you know it you can start feeling lightheaded and dizzy – classic signs of dehydration. Movers usually bring their own water but always appreciate when it’s offered by the homeowner. You don’t want your moving team to get dehydrated and potentially slow down your move.
Watch For Signs of Heat Exhaustion or Heat Stroke.
Like signs of dehydration, there are also more serious signs of heat exhaustion and stroke you need to be aware of. If at any point in your move you start to feel dizzy, nauseous, faint, develop a headache or experience muscle cramps, seizures or general confusion, you need to get out of the heat, drink plenty of water and lie down. Don’t hesitate to call 911 if you need to.
Pack Heat Susceptible Items Separately.
Things like batteries, candles, medicines, electronics and accessories, should be packed separately as they will not fare well in the heat of the moving truck. Taking them in your own vehicle where those items will stay cooler is always a better option.
