Moving Help: 7 Tips to Prepare for Moving Day

Uncategorized

The day of a move to a new home, whether it’s across the street or across the country, can be an extremely stressful time for everyone. But, with a little planning and organizing you can minimize your stress and focus on your new adventure.

Moving day should be the start of a new adventure, not a headache.

Follow these moving help tips to make move day as worry-free as possible.

1. Lighten the Load

Before the move, liquidate extra “stuff” for an easier move. This will save money and time. Host a garage sale a few months ahead or donate to friends, family, or local charities.

2. Have a Schedule and Stick to It

Not only should you have a schedule before your moving day, but you should have a schedule for the day of the move. The schedule does not have to be down to the second, but it should be specific about who needs to do what and when.

3. Inventory Everything

The best way to inventory is through a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet saved to a thumb-drive or cloud-based system for easy access. Organize the list by rooms and what items go in which box. Numbering each box will help tremendously. Valuable items should have a column to specify its monetary value. Make sure the valuables are insured, if possible.

4. Service Your Vehicles

Even if you are shipping your car, it is a good idea to have it serviced beforehand. This includes an inspection, oil change, tire rotation, and anything else your mechanic suggests. If you are shipping, make sure your vehicle does not hold any valuables inside.

5. Records and Important Documents

Any important paperwork, such as your birth certificate, social security card, and other files, should go with you on the plane or car.

6. Have Important Things Loaded Last

You should load your bedroom and kitchen boxes/furniture in the moving truck last, so they are first to unload at your new home/apartment. Having these rooms unloaded first will help make the first few days of unpacking more comfortable with a dedicated kitchen and bedroom ready.

7. Hire a Professional Mover

If at all possible, consider hiring professional movers trained to safely and efficiently pack and transport your belongings. Most moving companies are bonded and/or insured for any eventuality. Leaving the work to professionals will help reduce the stress of what should be an exciting time.
